As exciting as it is to move into a new home, not many people look forward to the actual moving day. And it's no wonder. Whether you are moving across town or across the country, moving can be stressful.

Fortunately, you don’t have to got it alone. When you work with me to sell or purchase a home, you’ll have an ally by your side long after your transaction has closed. I’ll continue to be a resource, offering advice and referrals whenever you need them on packing, hiring movers and contractors, and acclimating to your new home and neighborhood.

Here are some of my favorite pro tips to help you prepare for an upcoming move.

1. Schedule your move well ahead of time

Moving companies get booked up weeks in advance, so don’t wait until the last minute to schedule your move. Make sure they know ahead of time if you have any very large or heavy items to move. The last thing you want is for the movers to show up with a truck that isn’t big enough or without enough people to move your belongings safely.

2. Watch out for moving scams

Moving scams are increasingly prevalent, with over $730,000 lost to fraudulent movers in 2021, a significant rise from the previous year. To avoid falling victim, never assume a moving company is legitimate based on an online ad or flyer. Be wary if the price seems too good to be true or if the mover's business address is unclear. Trustworthy movers should offer transparent pricing, conduct in-home estimates, and provide referrals and insurance documents upon request.

Customer reviews are also a valuable resource. Look for consistent complaints about hidden fees or significant price increases, as these are red flags. Companies that lack third-party reviews might be short-lived scams. To protect yourself, research thoroughly and use trusted sources for recommendations. 3. Let the moving company pack your items

If it’s within your budget to hire packers, it may be money well spent. Packers are usually very efficient and take time to wrap fragile items securely. Packers will usually pack you the day before your move, so you don’t have to pack items away that you may need up until the day of your move.

4. Consider moving insurance

Your moving company might assure you that they will take care of your valuable items, such as a custom piano or large flat-screen TV. However, it's essential to verify their insurance coverage and understand the claims process to know what is and isn’t covered in case of loss or damage. For irreplaceable items like jewelry, documents, and family heirlooms, consider moving them yourself for added security.

Additionally, consult with your rental or home insurance provider about coverage for items you move yourself. You may already have protection or be able to purchase additional insurance. If these options are unavailable, consider getting moving insurance from a third-party carrier for extra peace of mind.

5. Schedule services in your new home

Before moving into your new home, ensure all essential services are transferred or started, including

  • Power
  • Water
  • Trash service
  • Internet/TV/Phone
  • Gas
  • Lawn service
  • Pool service
  • Security system monitoring

Additionally, have your new home professionally cleaned. If the seller hasn’t arranged for cleaning, take care of it yourself to ensure a fresh start in your new space.

6. Pack an "Open Me First!" box

When moving, pack an "Open Me First!" box to make your first day in your new home more comfortable. This box should include essentials such as:

  • Toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, shampoo)
  • A change of clothes
  • Basic kitchen items (plates, utensils, a few pots and pans)
  • Cleaning supplies
  • Important documents
  • Chargers for your devices
  • Medications
  • Basic tools (screwdriver, scissors, utility knife)

Label this box clearly and keep it accessible during the move so you can easily find everything you need to settle in quickly.

7. Make your bed!

As soon as your bed frames and mattresses come off the truck, put them together or have the movers put them together, and make them up. Pack your sheets, blankets, and pillows together in well-marked boxes so you can find them easily. When you are ready to collapse at the end of moving day, you’ll be thankful the beds are made up and ready to fall into.

Ditto for your towels and bath soap. Pack bath towels and soap with your bed sheets so you can jump in the shower before retiring without having to search for towels.

8. Prioritize unpacking kids’ rooms

If you have little ones, they will be very excited about their new home, new rooms, and yard. They will want to be with you, but they will not be interested in unpacking boxes!

Prioritize unpacking their rooms first, creating “safe zones” amidst the moving chaos. Setting up their rooms to be functional allows them to have a private space away from the bustle, providing comfort during the move.

Make plans for someone to be available just for them, so you can concentrate. A family member, friend or hired sitter can help them explore their new surroundings, build a box fort, or organize their toys in their new rooms without you worrying about where they are.

9. Make plans for your pets

The last thing you need on moving day is a stressed-out pup or kitty, or worse, one that escapes in an unfamiliar neighborhood. Make plans for your pets to spend the day with family or friends, a pet sitter, or boarding facility until you are ready to introduce them to their new home.

10. Check out of the old house

Prior to closing, you should have submitted a change of address form with the post office. You’ll also need to remember to leave all keys and garage door or gate openers, and make sure the movers don’t pack up things like ceiling fan remote controls or other loose items that stay with the house. Don’t forget to clean out spaces like the attic, backyard sheds, crawl spaces, or any other hideaway spaces you might have stored items. It’s always nice to have the home professionally cleaned for the new owners, and, if you feel inclined, leave a list of recommended local vendors for household services.

LET’S GET MOVING!

As you embark on your next move, remember that a little planning and organization can make the process much smoother. By following these tips, you'll be well on your way to settling into your new home with ease. If you need any assistance or have questions along the way, I'm here to help.
