Around this time of the year, families are getting together and heading out to the nearest lot to select the perfect tree. Why not start a new Christmas tradition? This year head to one of the many tree farms in the Bay Area to cut your own. It’s a great chance to be outdoors, breathing in the fresh pine scent. And when you’re done, enjoy a cup of hot chocolate with family and friends while creating new memories!
Here is my list of best Silicon Valley tree farms. Find your perfect Christmas tree, while getting into the holiday spirit! Most tree farms supply the saw, and the hot chocolate or apple cider. Why not make a day of it? Pack a picnic, roast marshmallows by the fire, ride the holiday train, and bring out your inner lumberjack! Don’t forget to dress warmly and bring boots, because it can be a little muddy.

ABC Tree Farms is a family-owned and operated farm that has been in operation for over 70 years. They offer a variety of pre-cut Christmas trees ranging in height from from 2 feet to 12+ feet including Noble Fir, Nordmann Fir, Balsam Fir, Douglas Fir, Grand Fir, and Silver Tip, as well fresh Christmas wreaths, garlands, and tree stands. Select your tree, and have it trimmed and loaded onto your vehicle at no additional charge by one of their helpful staff.

Black Road Christmas Tree Farm consists of 3 farms located on Black Road in Los Gatos. They have a wide selection of trees (Douglas Fir, Grand Fir, White Fir, Sierra Redwood, and Scotch Pine) for $70, as well as fresh wreaths for $35 (small) and $40 (large) and free firewood. They have picnic tables and a play structure and large lawn for the kids to play at the picnic area at Lakeside School, right next to Farm 1. Cash and checks accepted only.

Four Winds Ranch provides the saw and twine, and you choose and cut your perfect Christmas tree on their 60-acres farm. They have many types and sizes of trees, including Douglas Fir, White Fir, Grand Fir, Spruce, Blue Spruce, Silvertip, Noble, and Sequoia. All trees are $70. Bring a picnic lunch, and make it a new family tradition! On the weekends, Four Winds provides candy canes, hot chocolate, apple cider, and firewood while it lasts. Cash and checks accepted only.
Hours: Open Thanksgiving until Christmas: 8:30 am – 4:00 pm on weekends and the day after Thanksgiving, and 11:00 am – 3:00 pm on weekdays and Thanksgiving Day. Outside those hours you may visit the farm by appointment by contacting email@example.com.
Frosty's is just a short and picturesque 15 minute drive from Los Gatos. When you enter the farm gates, you will be given a small handsaw. You may either drive or walk through the rows of Christmas trees to find your ideal pesticide-free, naturally-grown Douglas Fir, Monterey Pine, Noble Fir, Sierra Pine or Scotch Pine. All trees are $90 regardless of size or variety. Cash only. Hot chocolate and coffee are available, plus free candy canes on the weekend.
Hours: Opens Thanksgiving Day from 8 am – 4:30 pm, seven days a week. In order to remain sustainable, they will be closing their farm on Dec 5th.
McKenzie Ranch is a family-owned and operated choose-and-cut tree farm. They will hand you a saw, and send you off to pick one of their thousands of trees, including Douglas Fir, White Fir, Grand Fir, and Red Fir. Trees are $60 – $70 depending on the variety up to 10 feet. Pack a picnic, and enjoy their scenic pond, crackling campfire and holiday tunes. Don’t forget to bring marshmallows! Candy canes are free on weekends. The ranch is dog-friendly. Cash only.

Mountain Charlie Ranch is a choose-and-cut Christmas tree farm on the smaller side in the Santa Cruz Mountains. They supply the saw and twine, and you select from a selection of natural or trimmed firs and pines. All trees are $80 including tax. The Patchen farms consist of two farms “Old Town” (Old Santa Cruz Hwy) and “Rancho” (Old Summit Rd). The farms have something for everyone. Either search the hillsides for your perfect tree and cut it yourself, or choose from one of their freshly-cut trees. They have all varieties, including Douglas Fir, Sierra Redwood, Coast Redwood, Monterey Pine, Noble Fir, and more. Trees are $79 – $99 up to 7 feet, depending on the variety. If you prefer, you can purchase a live tree from the gift shop. Varieties vary from year to year, and this year they have Miniature Alberta Spruce, Douglas Fir, Incense Cedar, and various "Charlie Brown" styles. They also have Mistletoe, Holy and handmade wreaths for sale in the gift shops.
Make a day of it by packing a picnic. Enjoy the bonfire, free hot-mulled cider and candy canes. During the week, there is free wine tasting, and on the weekends, you can have your picture taken with Santa. Snap a picture of the PATCHEN Grinch to enter to win a Stocking Stuffer.

Battaglia Ranch is a choose-and-cut Christmas Tree Farm located about 15 minutes south of San Jose, CA. You will know it by the 35-foot-tall Santa Claus off U.S. 101 between Morgan Hill and Gilroy. Choose between three varieties of choose-and-cut trees including the Monterey Pine, Monterey Cypress or Leyland Cypress, or pre-cut Fir trees from Oregon.
Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, the many things to do at the ranch to get you into the spirit of the season have been cancelled. This includes the 10-minute, narrated train ride around the 20 acres of ranch, and the reindeer ride for $4. Also Santa Claus will not be making his annual trip to the farm this year. You can still enjoy the outdoors if you choose to cut your own tree.
New since 2020, you can order your pre-cut tree online, select a pick-up date/time, and they will have your tree all ready to go. Delivery and contact-less pick up available. They also have a drive-thru option where you can stay in your car and drive-thru the Christmas lot to select your tree from the many varieties and sizes.

Castro Valley Christmas Tree Farm, located in the East Bay Hills just north of Castro Valley, is a choose-and-cut tree farm. They have a large selection of trees of all varieties and sizes including Monterey Pine for $73.25 plus tax, Douglas Fir, White Fir, Cedar and Redwood for $99.80 plus tax, and pre-cut Noble & Nordmann Fir for $95-105 plus tax.

Santa’s Tree Farm and Village a 487-acre choose-and-cut Christmas tree farm with six different kinds of Christmas trees, all growing right there on the farm. They give you a saw, and send you off to choose and cut your Douglas Fir, White Fir, Noble Fir, or Monterey Pine. Choose-and-cut trees are from $73.15 for any size. Prices for pre-cut trees depend on the size. Click here for $2 off any choose-and-cut tree. Flocking and fire retardant are available for an additional $10 per foot. Also available for purchase are handmade wreaths, garlands, and tree stands.
